In 2022, I finally took the step I’ve been dreaming of for a long time.
I kicked off my journey into discovering the world. I’ve had a taste of this before, including my profound trip to Japan in 2017, but due to my complicated health condition, I’ve had restrictions imposed on myself. I’ve experienced medical hardships, undergone plenty of surgeries, my physical capacity has been impeded throughout my life, but in April of 2022, I deemed myself capable and medically stable enough, to venture alone. It was a bold decision, considering my predicament.
I’ve been taught the value of travelling alone; being more susceptible to the surroundings, culture, people, and the personal development and mental clarity that follows along. It was very important for me to prove to myself I was capable of doing this. Considering how frightening it can be for most people to venture into the unknown, all alone, it was particularly intimidating for me with my additional health risks. I disregarded my anxious doubts, and stepped on a plane scheduled for Warsaw.
I chose Poland, what I considered a “safe” destination for my first solo-trip, based on close proximity to Norway, being a Schengen-member, having good healthcare, stable and rigid infrastructure, and low crime rates. This one-week expedition was a great success, it ignited my passion for travelling, and sparked my own personal odyssey. Despite the challenging burden of my lungs, I find great fulfillment in this journey.
I am launching my Travel Journal,
a blog for my thoughts, experiences, and recommendations from travelling!
To kick off this Travel Journal, I will summarize the key destinations I’ve been to so far, with images and a few sentences on my experience below! This is an excellent way for me to reflect, and I hope my journey can be insightful to other people as well!

Warszawa, Poland 🇵🇱
Warsaw; my first step into solo-backpacking. Such a lovely and persevering city. When thinking of European capitals, first thoughts usually goes to the famous ones; Paris, or perhaps London, but Warsaw is an underrated gem. It’s super easy-going, at no point during my visits here do I feel stressed out while exploring the urban landscape. In sunny weather, I recommend strolling through the Royal Baths Park, sit down at a bench overlooking the great Frédéric Chopin Monument, take in the view while enjoying a coffee.
Warsaw is a charming capital with just a fraction of the touristic crowds. Also, a must go for history-buffs!

The capital has a dark yet important part in history. The Warsaw Rising museum is, in my opinion – the most important visit in this city. It left me a profound impression, an insight into how the soviets and the Germans inflicted great destruction on this city back in the day, yet the people’s spirit was never broken.

My trip would not be complete without mentioning Julia, my first ever couchsurfing-host, and introduction to the Couchsurfing community. To me, being welcomed to someone’s home, sharing and discussing cultural differences, and getting to know the locals is a far more crucial component than seeing the tourist-designated highlights when travelling and learning about other countries.

Paris, France 🇫🇷
The french capital. My host and now dear friend, Victor – gave me an incredible introduction to this iconic city. He lives in the gorgeous 18th arrondissiment, next to Sacre Cæur, and beautiful streets of Montmartre. We’ve explored hidden gems and enjoyed cocktails, wines, and delicious steaks covered in Roquefort-sauce.
It’s hard to find a place with so many highlights concentrated within one city. The Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, La Defense, Louvre, Centre Pompidou, the list goes on and on.

As an artist, Paris is the place to be. There’s an incredible variety, from classic renaissance to intriguing modern. The famous Louvre is a magnificent experience, but I was just as impressed with the range and selection of contemporary installments in Centre Pompidou. Musée Grévin is a less mainstream alternative where you can see some seriously impressive wax figures of celebrities and historic people. It goes without saying, if you’re passionate about art, you need to see Paris.
The metro system is excellent and connects you to all arrondissiments in Paris. It is the 2nd busiest in Europe, only surpassed by Moscow, and 10th busiest in the world. The Navigo Transit Card grants you unlimited rides for a whole week, for just 30 euros. Paris is a huge city, and the Navigo Card is absolutely essential if you want to cover as much of the city as possible within a short amount of time.

I first laid eyes on the Eiffel Tower watching a Disney-movie when I was two years old. Very curious and impressionable, I was instantly drawn to the iconic silhouette that shapes the tower. There was something magical and serene about it.
25 years later,
Just like the child watching Disney’s “Aristocats”, I was drawn to the tower like a magnet to a refrigerator. Just hours off my flight, I made my way from the 18th arrondissement, walked along the river, past the Louvre, towards my obsession. The scene was perfectly set, I arrived during the Golden Hour, purple and orange skies, I watched the tower light up the sky after sunset.
Some say Paris has been romanticized, but speaking for myself; I finally felt the same magical sensation as an adult, that I’ve been reminiscing about since my childhood.

Spain 🇪🇸
I’ve been coming back to Spain more than any other country, spending months here in total. It may perhaps be the country I settle in, if I ever reach a point I’m content with exploring. The vibrant culture, dreamy scenery, and the year-round gorgeous weather – will seduce any traveler to make it a recurring destination.
I’ve explored more territory here than any other country by far – besides my own, of course. I’ve been to the Catalonian cities of Barcelona & Tarragona, the capital Madrid, the charming city in Costa Blanca; Alicante, and the warm and sunny region of Andalusia; in Malaga, Seville, and Granada. I could write about these regions on their own, and probably will, but I look forward to delve into this amazing country as a whole.

If I was compelled to recommend just one destination in Spain, it might be Granada. It’s severely underrated compared to larger cities such as Valencia and Barcelona, and it has such a cultural and historical significance. The marvelous palace of Alhambra is an UNESCO must-see, and a stroll through the lush surrounding nature is a serene break from crowded spaces.
I meet more people in two weeks travelling than I do in a year at home.

Marrakech, Morocco 🇲🇦
My first step into Africa. An adventure unlike anything I’ve experienced in Europe so far.
I made my first trip in the middle of December, 2022. The coldest winter-month here is as cold as the warmest summer-month back in Norway. As if that wasn’t enough, I made my second trip to Marrakech in June, 2023. The heat can be daunting, but as long as you chug down gallons of water persistently throughout the day, you’ll be fine.
Walking down the loud and bustling markets of Marrakech, listening to the prayers from the speakers resonating all around the city, I was amazed. Colorful spices are everywhere, the characteristic mosaics tiles, and mesmerizing lanterns.

Jemaa el-Fnaa; the city square, is chaotic, yet beautiful. Moroccan people I’ve gotten to know personally are super generous and kind people, but travelers should be wary of certain individuals prying on tourists with incessant scams and schemes, particularly in the Medina and central square. The authorities are tired of this, and any mention of seeking or talking to a police officer will have them scrambling away immediately.
Moroccan cuisine is something to look forward to. You must try the Tajine. You will also be served a lot of mint tea, courtesy of the fantastic Moroccan people.

The coastal town of Essaouira is a gorgeous, relaxing, and less crowded alternative to Marrakech. A popular destination for surfers, although I haven’t tried that yet. I like camels though, and you can ride them along the windy shores and curvy dunes, which is more fun than the flat surfaces around Marrakech. I found several charming art studios here, and had delightful conversations with the local artists. There are cats absolutely everywhere, which is a big bonus as far as I’m concerned.

Rome, Italy 🇮🇹
Rome was the final destination of my 2022 travels, an excellent way of ending the year. Christmas is a cozy time to visit the city, the Vatican has beautiful ornaments for the occasion. The ruins of an ancient civilization, the Colosseum, is a reminder of how fleeting our time is. I found the narrow and cozy streets surrounding the Trevi Fountain to be the most lovely area to relax, stroll, and eat in.

My personal highlight was meeting the great contemporary artist Francesco Corica, and receiving his approval of my own artistic expressions.
His work has been displayed everywhere around the world from Paris to Miami. I am completely fascinated by his abstractions, and his decades of experience and inspiration.
Being an artist myself, he wanted to look at my work. At this point in time I had only sold one painting, so I felt somewhat apprehensive showing off my own paintings to someone of that stature, for the fear that my work might be mediocre. Mr. Corica speaks very little English, so his assistant/secretary stood as a translator between us.
I browsed photos on my phone and watched his expression. “Bravo!”, he said. That stuck with me. He was captivated by my own abstractions and wanted to see more. He told me my work was already good, but he emphasised that in the future I would become a “Grande Artista”.
His encouragement made me almost tear up inside his studio.
I’ve sold multiple paintings since then, and would’ve in all likelihood invested way less time and energy into painting hadn’t it been for my encounter with Francesco Corica.

It’s impossible to talk about Italy without touching on the food. The culinary experience lives up to its expectation, and is a reason alone to visit. I discovered my favourite pizza; the Capricciosa. Pizza will never be the same again, eating at home in Norway. I usually don’t have a sweet tooth, but I make an exception for Gelado, and eating it here was pure pleasure. I’d recommend a particular restaurant, but all the ones I visited was exceptional. Just let your nose and eyes guide you.

Lisbon & Porto, Portugal 🇵🇹
Portugal is often overshadowed by it’s larger neighbor Spain, but is an amazing destination on its own. Although they share the Iberian peninsula, there is a distinct difference. The coast towards the Atlantic has a lot of majestic cliffs, white beaches, and photogenic towns.
Lisbon is the oldest city in Europe, has a fascinating history, and its streets are super characteristic and picturesque. Walking throughout Lisbon will give you a good workout, as steep hills are everywhere. Exploring Bairro Alto and Pink Street in the evening is a good source of entertainment. Seafood is particularly tasty in Lisbon, which the city is quite famous for. They do love cod.

Porto is like a smaller version of Lisbon, with less trams. It also stands out with the iconic bridge and even steeper hills. The local tradition here is Francesinha, an egg-cheese-meat sandwich, usually served with fries and a special sauce. Do not miss out on an authentic Pastéis de Nata, I think I can confidently say the best ones are found in Porto, at Manteigaria – Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata.

Prague, Czechia 🇨🇿
Prague is an absolute pearl of European architecture. The castles are some of the most beautiful buildings I’ve seen. If you happen to enjoy fermented grains, you’ll be pleased to know that beer is cheaper than water here, and served absolutely everywhere.
Although it’s been on my list, my main purpose of visiting Prague, was to attend the 10-year-anniversary of Space Engineers, hosted by the lovely staff of the game development company; Keen Software.
An unexpected highlight from my trip was meeting my idol, my all-time favourite comedian, the legendary Bill Burr. I was absolutely star-struck. This man has been a giant source of joy and laughter through thick and thin. Approaching him, amongst his bodyguards – I was prepared to have my whole existence completely roasted by his Bostonian temper, but he was a real sweetheart.

Wadi Rum, Jordan 🇯🇴
The most spectacular adventure to date.
Seeing the Mars-like landscape in movies and photos have been alluring me for ages, but nothing could prepare me for the real thing. Photos cannot convey the awe from seeing the red desert with your own eyes. I dreamt of wandering in Lawrence of Arabia’s footsteps for many years, back to a time I was too sick to travel. Actually being there, seeing the sunset, and the onset of stars littering the sky had a profound effect on me and moved me to tears.

I rode a World War 1 war-train from the outskirts into the heart of Wadi Rum. It was the second most exhilarating experience I’ve had on my travels so far, right after a robbery attempt in Morocco.

Just a little north of Wadi Rum, in Wadi Musa, I hiked all the way through Petra, up the thousand steps, in scorching sun – to Monastery Ed-Deir. By far my most challenging trial of endurance in 2023, but I persevered.

That highlights my favourite moments these last two years. All the destinations I’ve been to so far – including Bratislava, Slovakia 🇸🇰, Budapest, Hungary 🇭🇺 – have all their amazing moments, but Jordan 🇯🇴 in the Middle East takes the trophy as the most spectacular experience in my journey so far. I will go more in-depth about each country – in their own dedicated posts.
